Abstract

Abstract

This volume presents comprehensive research on how southern European Catholics and the Japanese confronted each other, interacted and mutually experienced religious otherness in early modern times. In their highly variable and asymmetric relations, during which the politi¬cal-military elites of Japan at times not only favoured, but also opposed and strictly controlled the European presence, missionaries - particularly the Jesuits - tried to negotiate this power balance with their interlocutors. This collection of essays analyses religious and cultural interactions between the Christian missions and the Buddhist sects through processes of coopera¬tion, acceptance, confrontation and rejection, dialogue and imposition, which led to the creation of new relational spaces and identities.

Abstract

Although over eighty percent of the country is Muslim, Indonesia is marked by an extraordinary diversity in language, ancestry, culture, religion and ways of life. This book focuses on the Christian Dani of West Papua, providing a social and ethnographic history of the most important indigenous population in the troubled province. It presents a fascinating overview of the Dani's conversion to Christianity, examining the social, religious and political uses to which they have put their new religion. Based on independent research carried out over many years among the Dani people, the book provides an abundance of new material on religious and political events in West Papua. Underlining the heart of Christian-Muslim rivalries, the book questions the fate of religion in late-modern times.

Abstract

The Interdisciplinary Journal for Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society - J-RaT is an interdisciplinary, international peer reviewed, open access journal. The objective of the journal is to contribute to the academic debate on the influence of religions on political, cultural and spiritual dynamics in globalised societies, and also, conversely, to discuss the impact of societal transformation processes on contemporary religions and religious forms of expression. An interdisciplinary approach takes this interplay between religion and societal change into account. Such an approach requires the combined endeavours of different academic disciplines to open up an interdisciplinary sphere of research both for theologies of different denominations and religions (Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, etc.) as well as for religious studies, religious philosophy, sociology of religions, law, social sciences, Jewish studies, Islamic studies, Indology etc. The editors of the J-RaT comprises members of the Research Centre Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society (RaT). An international editorial board supports cooperation among scholars and guarantees both a wide sphere of research as well as a corresponding dissemination strategy. Frequency of publication: JRT is issued twice yearly (July / December), with 5-10 contributions per issue. The languages of publication are German, English, Spanish or Italian.

Abstract

"This anthology presents and discusses perceptions on the notion of love in ancient philosophy and early Christian theology. The notion of love is discussed firstly in two critical readings of Anders Nygren's study Agape and Eros (1930-36). Nygren's distinction of eros, on the one hand, as an egocentric, human love and agape, on the other hand, as Christian, theocentric and divine love, has long been received almost as a dogmatic truth and prevented a more nuanced understanding. The metaphysics and ethics of love are further discussed in relation to Platonic, Neoplatonic, biblical and early Christian - especially Eastern Christian - thinking. Related questions such as "Is all love essentially divine?"and "Is unselfish love possible?" and themes such as love as a unifying force, and ascetical love, are also discussed. The papers were first presented at an international research seminar, The Metochi Seminar, at the University of Agder's study centre in Greece (the Metochi Study Centre), on the island of Lesvos."

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

In this ground-breaking volume, the authors explore two sides of religion: the ways in which it contributes to violence against women and girls (VAWG) and the ways it counters it. Recognising the very real impact of religion on the lives of women and girls, it prioritises experiences and learnings from empirical research and of practitioners, and their activities at grassroots-level, to better understand the nature and root causes of VAWG. Drawing on research done in Christian and Muslim communities in various fragile settings with high religiosity, this book avoids simplistically assigning blame to any one religion, instead engaging with the commonalities of how religion and religious actors influence norms and behaviours that impact VAWG. If the sustainable development goal of ending all forms of VAWG is to be achieved, how should actors in the international development sector engage with religion and religious actors? This book unpacks the nature of religion and religious actors in relation to VAWG, with the aim of giving greater clarity on how to (and how not to) engage with this crucial issue. Combining cutting-edge research with case studies and pragmatic recommendations for academics, policymakers and practitioners, this concise and easily accessible volume helps instigate discussion and engagement with the incredibly important relationships between religion and VAWG.

Abstract

This research focuses on the d'Este cardinals' diplomatic and religious actions and on their role as mediators between Italy and France. The objective is to uncover the geopolitical foundations of their actions whilst highlighting the different scales thereof. The presence of Ippolito II and Luigi d'Este is studied both in terms of their material presence and their participation in the political stakes of the time. Finally, by examining their modus operandi on the international scene, this study argues that a Catholic identity is emerging which is not heterodox for which crossing the mountains leads to readjustments in manners of expressing and representing the Catholic faith.
